A diet is just like that leaking pipe. You keep on dealing with the problem without ever fixing the root cause of the problem. Diets tell you when and what to eat, and you have to rely on willpower to get you through it. That willpower takes effort – just like emptying that bucket every day.
In almost all cases, willpower just doesn't last that long. As a result, you feel deprived, which leads to overeating and weight gain.
On the other hand, if you fix the root cause of your overeating, like fixing the leaking pipe, then you've solved the problem for good, which means:

You started eating when it was the right time of day to eat, like lunch time. Or you learned that food brings love or comfort: "Have a cookie; you'll feel better."
