Healthier Outcomes

Welcome

Gillian Hood-Gabrielson

As promised, I am finally back and getting into my routine once again after surgery in late May. This should be my final operation after shattering my femur in 2004. I gave myself a whole week off to recover (aren't I a wonderful boss?) and that was of course very unrealistic.

I really needed much more time since I had physical recovering to do and also dealing with the frustration of not being able to do everything for myself and not walking for a few weeks. (I was very crabby, just ask my husband!) But there's nothing like surgery to remind you what is important and to make you appreciate little things like walking!

I included a picture of the hardware they removed from my leg for those of you that like that kind of thing (like me!). I was so surprised how heavy it was. I don't know what to do with it now, but it's kind of cool. :)

I will be sharing many more resources, links, and lots of other interesting things in future newsletters, but also on Facebook and Twitter so please connect with me there. I'm having a lot of fun meeting new people and connecting with old friends.

hardwareTo all of you who completed my survey in April/May, thank you. A new, improved newsletter will be revealed soon. For now, I hope you enjoy this month's newsletter!

Cats Have Powers to Heal

Cats Have Powers to Heal

catOur cats make us happy. They calm us when we're stressed, make us feel loved, and entertain us with their antics (except at 2 a.m.). But did you know that their special powers may also extend to improving our health?

It's true. Here's what the research says about how our pets -- including cats -- help watch over our well-being:

  • TLC for your ticker: People with pets have a lower risk of developing cardiovascular disease than do people without pets, suggests one study. In fact, related research tells us pets can increase 1-year survival rates in people recovering from a heart attack and can lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
  • Cancer recovery made easier: In a study of women recuperating from breast cancer surgery, most who owned pets reported feeling a greater sense of support and control over their illness and treatment.
  • Mind and mood boost. In older populations, research suggests that pets may help chase away loneliness and reduce symptoms of dementia. And in a study of men living with AIDS, research revealed that those who owned cats reported fewer symptoms of depression than the men without a pet.
  • Overall health protection: People in a study who owned either a cat or a dog suffered significantly fewer minor health problems compared with people who were not owners. Similar research found that having pets also meant fewer trips to the doctor.

A Must-Have for my Fellow Introverts!

Many people that I work with tend to be introverted or shy. I can relate to this, I am the same way. Most people don't know this because they hear me on the phone or read my articles and newsletters and they don't get "shy" from me. Get me around people I don't know, the shy turns on very quickly! I have worked on being more outgoing at business and networking functions because it's really a must, but I do wish I had met Dr. Doris Helge years ago when I first started networking and putting myself out there.

Recently Doris told me about a new program she had created called "Joy on the Job for Introverts and Shy People". I asked her if I could let my subscribers know about it because I know many of you would like to feel comfortable just being yourself at work and have fun at social events without pretending to be someone else. Something very important that I have learned is that there is nothing wrong with me, I don't need to "fix" anything. My introverted personality comes with many positive traits that allow me to really connect with people and help them move forward to fully living their lives. If you have ever felt that you need to be "fixed" or that you "should" be more like someone else, I encourage you to check out Doris' program. Here is the information so you can see for yourself.

Are you introverted or shy? Stop struggling to compete with extroverts. Discover how to be financially and socially rewarded for being 100% YOU. "Joy on the Job for Introverts and Shy People" eBook and mp3s by Doris Helge, Ph.D. shows you how to easily & quickly get your needs met, gain more positive recognition and financial rewards, boost your presentation & sales confidence, & deal with difficult people.

"I'll Never Look Like Those Models in the Magazines!"

Have you ever said or thought this? Usually it's followed by a sigh and a trip to the cookie jar. Well, I'm here to give you the hard truth. Ready? You're absolutely right, you never will look like the models in the magazines...

It's not because of your genetics, what you eat, how much exercise you get, and especially not because of your perceived lack of willpower...

It's because the models themselves don't even look like their own pictures in the magazines!

This interactive display shows you in detail what had to be done to a model (a young one, too!) to make her picture ready for publication. Check it out for yourself (it takes time for it to load, so be patient - it's worth the wait!).

This blog post gives a bunch of other places you can go to see more examples of retouching.

Everyone is Talking About "The Woman on pg. 194"...

I believe the tide is starting to turn. Finally. I don't read many magazines because I am not interested in reading about how so-and-so lost 10 pounds in a week or the new "fat-burning" workout, or basically all the things that are wrong with me. Eat this, do that exercise, be this kind of parent, do this for beautiful hair, it goes on and on.

But...Glamour Magazine recently included an awesome picture of a very "normal" woman who looks very comfortable in her body. And this picture was part of an article on body acceptance - not a topic you see everyday on the newsstands. Cindi Leive, Editor-in-Chief of Glamour, who wrote the article, was inundated with messages from woman thanking her for publishing a picture of a woman who they can relate to.

Check it out and be sure to read the whole article because the woman in the picture had some comments about the excitement of her picture. If you are so moved, please leave a comment at the end of the article. Right now as I look at that page there are quite a few "catty" comments going on among a few people. No one needs that negativity. Also, at the end of the article is a link to take you to the actual article in Glamour which is also a good read.

Have You Heard of PLUS Model Magazine?

One of the members of the Intuitive Eating Support Yahoo Group posted a link to this YouTube video. Until seeing the video, I had not heard of PLUS Model Magazine. All the magazines I know of that promote self-acceptance at any size (and usually they don't have a model under a size 12) have disappeared. I just found out that Figure stopped publishing earlier this year.

Anyway, this magazine appears to be more of an industry publication, for plus-sized models (can we come up with a better name than "plus-sized"?). But I think it would be worth buying or subscribing to as a reminder to yourself that all women are beautiful and honestly, I think these women are much more beautiful than a lot of the models in the popular women's magazines. Check out the video, you will love it!

By the way, if you have any recommendations for magazines, please let me know. I do hope there are still some out there.
