Healthier Outcomes

Welcome

Gillian Hood-Gabrielson

It has been very exciting in recent months to see so many people joining the non-diet movement, leaving behind the viscious diet-overeat-guilt-diet again cycle that only creates obsession, decreased self-esteem and of course more weight gain. Who needs it? We have had a large number of people jump off the diet wagon and join our Intuitive Eating Support Yahoo group, and the relief and freedom they express from just making that decision are quite apparent.

This has inspired me to hold a contest, and the winner will receive registration to his or her choice of my two upcoming Am I Hungry? teleworkshops. The contest is appropriately called, “Why I Want to Stop Dieting.” All you need to do is post your reason for wanting to quit on my blog by February 28th. A panel of members of the Intuitive Eating Support Yahoo group will be judging and choose the answer they like best. Anyone who enters, regardless of who wins, also receives $50 off the registration to the workshop, so I encourage you to visit the blog today and also sign up before registration closes. I’ve included a bit of info about the workshops in this month’s newsletter, and you can also go to BreakOutofDietPrison.com for all the details and sign up information.

I have a lot more interesting information to share in this month’s newsletter, so keep reading! Have a wonderful rest of the month and enjoy the extra day we get this year on the 29th!

Six Metabolism Myths - Busted!

Q & A

Q:  Food diaries and journals remind me of dieting, so I’ve been resistant to use them with Intuitive Eating. Can either be helpful in the process of learning Intuitive Eating?

A:  I really like the idea of using a food diary or journal to track hunger and fullness. What I do with my clients is use a diary to record the time and what eaten (no measurements, though, just what the food was), where they were on the hunger scale at start and finish, and any moods, thoughts or feelings that were going on at the time. Using a diary can help you identify patterns you wouldn’t notice otherwise; and in doing this, you can also really see how certain things are affecting your eating, whether it's the type of food, getting too hungry, or feelings, etc.

That being said, it's important that you are comfortable doing this. You aren’t alone in feeling resistant to doing this, because it brings back memories of dieting days. I never force anyone to keep a diary or a journal if they don't want to. But I look at it as "data collection," as opposed to writing down food so you “behave.” There's a huge difference. I've seen some people use blogs or journals to keep track of food and/or feelings in a less structured way as well. It has to fit your style and personality.

I can say that you can be successful using either tool, or even neither. There is no definitive answer to your question. It has to fit your personality or style. If I told you that you must do it to be successful, I may as well tell you to go on a diet!

Six Metabolism Myths - Busted!

Despite overwhelming research, a host of calorie-burning misconceptions abound. Your best friend insists she has a slow metabolism, and your coworker swears by grapefruit fasts. But do these calorie-burning conceptions hold any weight?

Myth: Metabolism is mostly genetic.
Reality: Although genes play a role, the biggest basal metabolic rate (BMR) factor is body composition, which is largely determined by activity level.

Myth: Metabolism varies greatly from person to person.
Reality:
BMRs vary somewhat, but very few people actually have a slow metabolism, unless they're inactive, insulin-resistant, or have an underactive thyroid.

Myth: Spices boost your calorie-burning ability and help you lose weight.
Reality:
While anything that raises body temperature will increase your metabolism, the effect of spices is too minor and fleeting to have an impact on weight loss.

Myth: Supplements can help you burn more calories.
Reality:
Tempting as those amber bottles may be, there’s no scientific evidence to support the theory that supplements increase metabolism.

Myth: Fasting can rev your metabolism and help you shed pounds.
Reality:
Because fasting forces your body to go into starvation mode, it actually slows your calorie-burning ability, encourages your body to store more fat, and increases your obesity risk.

Myth: It's inevitable that your metabolism will slow with age.
Reality:
Although your baseline burn rate decreases 2 to 3 percent every decade after you turn 30, you can reverse the trend with regular training and cardiovascular activity.
