We have winners in the Why I Want to Stop Dieting contest! Thanks to everyone who gave the time and thought in their entries. It was a hard decision and a close contest. I'm glad I handed the decision over to my Intuitive Eating Yahoo Group! I've posted the winning entries on my blog. Congratulations to the winners! We're having a great time so far in the Am I Hungry? March workshop. I would love to have you join us for the next workshop beginning Tuesday, April 1st! I won't be holding another workshop until possibly the end of this summer, so if you are interested, now is the time!
There is a lot to share in this issue - many new resources including the Fresh Start After Divorce Community, my interview on the More Joy on the Job Podcast with Doris Helge, and all the latest news from the Women's Health and Fitness Podcast Directory. I am also including a new article that asks what happened to the low-carb diet craze, as well as something just for fun that I think you will enjoy. I'll keep this short so we can get right to it!

This month I have a couple of items to share with you. First, I received Judi Finneran’s Team Women newsletter and read about her experience at a Jack Canfield seminar. I loved her take-away and asked her if I could share it with all of you. Second, I will be a guest on Lisa Fredette’s radio program next week, and she is looking for other guests, so I wanted to pass along the opportunity and encourage you to listen in to my interview.
Judi Finneran of Team Women:
In February I attended a two and a half day seminar with Jack Canfield. I have always been a huge fan and have read all of his books. During the course of program I had several ah-ha moments. One is that my most important core value is FREEDOM! No wonder I want to travel the country in a motor home.
In Jack Canfield’s book The Success Principles, he has broken down success into six areas. The first area is The Fundamentals of Success and as business owners and entrepreneurs, the 24 principles he lists are critical to our personal and business success. Principle number one is:
“Take 100% Responsibility for Your Life”
In taking one hundred percent responsibility, Jack says:
- You have to give up all of your excuses.
- If you do not like your outcomes, change your responses.
- You have to give up blaming.
- You have to give up complaining.
Taking one hundred percent of responsibility for our success in business can be difficult. When I was a real estate agent, lots of agents would say the market is no good, people are not buying, interest rates are too high, etc. What I found was that people needed to be buying and selling homes every day regardless of the market conditions.
I admit sometimes it can be comforting to blame others when things don’t happen the way we want. It takes the focus off of us and what we could have done differently or done more of. However, when we say “well that did not work” and try something new, two good things happen. One – we learned what did not work and we only have to learn each lesson once. Two – we have the opportunity to try something new which could work better.
When we take 100% responsibility, we can always affect the outcome!

This was sent to me by a client, so I don’t really know who to credit it to, but it’s too funny not to share...
Yesterday I was buying a large bag of Purina Dog Chow for Skeeter, our new hunting dog at Wal-Mart and was standing in line about to check out. A woman behind me asked if I had a dog. First thing I thought was “Where is your sign lady”, but decided to go with it. So…..on impulse, I told her that no, I didn't have a dog, and that I was starting the Purina Weight Loss Diet again.
I said I probably shouldn't, because I'd ended up in the hospital last time. But I did lose 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive care ward with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both arms.
I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and that the way that it works is that you load your pants pockets with Purina nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry and that the food is nutritionally complete - so I was going to try it again.
I have to mention here that practically everyone in the line was by now enthralled with my story to say the least.
Totally horrified, the lady asked if I ended up in intensive care because the dog food poisoned me. I told her no, I had stepped off a curb to sniff an Irish Setter's butt and a car hit us both.
I thought the guy behind her was going to have a heart attack he was laughing so hard.
WAL-MART asked me not to shop there anymore…

March 2008

If you are ready to break out of diet prison and heal your relationship with food and your body once and for all, my next workshop may be just what you are looking for. The March workshop is going strong and we're having a great time. Here's what some of the participants are saying:
"I am so impressed with this class so far! We're only two classes in and I've already learned so much. My thoughts and feelings about food and activity have shifted, and I feel so much better about my relationship with food - and myself! It's been amazing. I can't wait to see how I feel by the end of the class!"
"I have learned much more about hunger and satiety at Am I Hungry than I could anywhere else. Before finding this workshop I used to think that I was stuck in a perpetual cycle of overeating and would never be in control. Although I am only in the beginning, Am I Hungry is helping me relearn how to eat instinctively."
"Gillian's workshops are amazing. The support is incredibly helpful and I've learned so much from her and the rest of the class. The workshops are helping me realize that my thought process is totally "normal" for people who have been stuck in the over-eating and restrictive eating cycles...and that I CAN overcome them and reach new goals. These workshops have increased my knowledge, my motivation, my hope, and my quality of life!! Thank you so much Gillian!"
Sign up now and get $50 off your registration!
Our next workshop begins April 1st at 10am Pacific time. Visit BreakOutofDietPrison.com for full details and to sign up. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about the class or want to discuss if it is the right thing for you.

Have you noticed the quiet disappearance of the low-carb diet craze? For me, it couldn’t have left fast enough. Atkins and other high-protein diets have been around for some time, and the nation's obesity numbers are still growing. If low-carb is so great, why are we, as a nation, still the most obese? Because low-carb, high-carb – or any other diet for that matter – don't work.
And there are negative effects: bad breath, constipation, and low intake of disease-preventing phytochemicals and antioxidants from plant foods (especially fruits, vegetables, beans, brown rice, whole wheat breads and high fiber cereals). In the long term, the negative effects are more significant: increased risk for kidney problems, higher cholesterol levels, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.
But it makes me wonder what the next trend will be. The dairy industry was promoting three servings a day to help lose weight for a while. This came from a study that shows calcium may aid in weight loss. Aren’t we already supposed to be getting 2 to 3 servings of dairy a day anyway? Seems I learned that back in Nutrition 101.
Here’s some useful research - Not eating breakfast is associated with an increased risk of obesity. In addition, those who eat four times or more a day have a 45% lower risk of being obese. Many dieters skip breakfast and eat less all day.
So I propose a new trend... Stop dieting, eat often, and never skip breakfast! This is easier than dieting, starving, weighing and measuring. You may find time for more important things. Join me, won’t you?
Here are some tips to ensure healthy, safe, and permanent weight loss.
- Eat when you are hungry, stop when you are full If you don’t know how this feels, start tuning into your body. This is called “intuitive eating,” something we all knew how to do when we were young children.
- Be sure to have some protein with every meal to balance the carbohydrates and stabilize blood sugar (do not cut out carbs – they are not the enemy!).
- Eliminate “good” and “bad” from your vocabulary when discussing food, eat what you enjoy, but follow rules 1 and 2 above.
- Do not go on another diet – ever – unless you want a slower metabolism and more weight gain.
- Exercise. It has so many benefits, and weight loss is a side effect of doing it consistently.
- Get support when you need it. You do not have to be alone in your quest to lose weight. Enlist the help of friends, family, or a health and fitness professional to keep you going.
