Happy Summer to you all! I am back from my week in Nashville and the Country Music Festival, but still trying to recover from all the fun! If you are a fan of country music, I highly recommend attending the festival at least one time, it’s an amazing experience. We already have our tickets for next year, and if you want to join us, check out the 2008 website.
In my new Am I Hungry? Teleworkshop, we have been talking about trust quite a bit. This includes trusting your body to tell you what it needs, showing your body that it can trust you to feed it when it asks, and trusting that you can give up dieting and still return to your body’s natural weight. It’s certainly a major theme and I found it interesting when this project came across my email. At http://www.trustgivers.com/ChooseTrust_V4.HTML, you can make your declaration of trust, in whatever you want, and a tree will be planted on your behalf. That’s it, no strings, no obligation, no purchase of anything, just a willingness to trust. Their goal is to plant 10,000 trees, I can’t think of a better win-win situation!
I have some new resources to recommend. I have taken over the ownership and moderation of the Intuitive Eating Support Yahoo Group and invite you to join and check it out. We have a large group of members at various stages of learning and implementing Intuitive Eating asking for and offering advice and support. The best part is there is never any charge to join a Yahoo group.
I am also writing on health and fitness for a few awesome web sites. First, I am starting a new column called, “Stop the Weighting”, at Women’s Online Magazine, which launches Thursday, June 28th. Women’s Online Magazine consists of a talented editorial team and individual columnists, recognized as experts in their fields, who bring you cutting-edge, multi-media content via video, audio and print.
Also check out the brand new Passionate for Life and Modern Sage, where I am an expert writer and available to answer your questions.
Until next month, stay healthy!

Losing weight is more than the simple explanation of calories in, calories out. If you want to lose weight, you first have to take a look at why you have the extra weight and how it is benefiting you.
If simply eating less calories than you expend worked, almost anyone on a diet would lose weight. Sometimes it does work and you do lose weight. But if you are like 95% of all dieters, the weight comes back, and usually more than when you started. Diets don’t address emotional overeating which is a major reason why people gain weight and why they can’t lose it.
If you find this is true for you, it may be time to ask yourself a question: “What is this extra weight doing for me?” This may seem like a ridiculous question at first, because you say you want to lose weight. But if you really think about it, despite all your efforts to lose weight that should work, something is keeping it from actually happening.
Finding the answer to this question may be uncomfortable. Often the answer is something you don’t want to admit or bring consciousness to. One of the more common reasons is because of past abuse. Extra weight is like a shield or a fence that keeps others out so they cannot hurt you. By understanding this, you can take action to heal (therapy, for example) and work through the issues that are holding you back from living completely.
For others, the reason may not be so deep or intense. Sometimes the weight provides you something that you can use as a distraction to avoid dealing with something else. The weight allows you to be unhappy about being overweight, instead of dealing with the real problem, which may be a relationship, career, or numerous other reasons.
Among other common reasons include not wanting to date, wanting to be part of a group of friends (what would you talk about if you didn’t have your body to complain about?), having the weight to use as an excuse for not taking on new challenges (when fear is really the reason), or perhaps you grew up being told you come from a family of overweight people and that is your fate – in other words, fulfilling a destiny that may not have been inevitable.
By bringing the answer of what the weight is doing for you to your consciousness, you can then deal with it or dismiss it to allow the weight loss to begin. The next time you feel compelled to go on a diet, take some time to look inward instead. You may just find true success this time.

Want to add a fun twist to your exercise program? Need to integrate more calorie-burning activity into your daily habits? These five outdoor activities will have you burning calories for a fitter, more trim body.
- Hula-hoop: You say you haven’t done this since you were a kid? Me neither! My niece works at a medical spa where the doctor recommends Sports Hoop (a weighted hula-hoop) for his patients who want to trim down. The spa sold over 100 hoops in just a few months and their patients are seeing good results. Of course you can borrow the good old-fashioned kind from your kids or buy one at the local toy store.
- Push it: Pushing a stroller during your walk, jog, or rollerblade workout greatly increases the intensity and calorie burning potential of that activity. If you don’t have kids, offer to your friend or family member to baby sit for an hour to workout. I walked hills with my niece in a stroller last month – I also tried simultaneously to sing her a song (yikes) – and felt a significant difference in intensity.
- Forgo the car: Do you frequent a neighborhood store, café, or coffee shop? If it is within a reasonable distance, consider walking. On weekends, make it a family affair.
- Play dates: This week I am meeting two friends for a walk and dinner. If I had not recommended the walk, it would be dinner only. You might be surprised at the response you receive when recommending a play date. Most people jump at the chance for an “excuse” to be active.
- Beach barefoot: walking on an uneven surface uses more muscles (burning more calories) than walking on an even surface. Go to the beach – or other available area – and walk in the sand. Wet sand is fairly easy, but a good place to start. For a better challenge, walk in dry sand. You’ll feel it in muscles you didn’t know you had.

Some reasons to seek immediate medical attention aren't obvious
ROCHESTER, Minn. -- June 05, 2007--Chest pains, abdominal pain and unexplained bleeding are good reasons to seek immediate medical care.
Other reasons to seek immediate medical care are less well known. The June issue of Mayo Clinic Health Letter covers 10 symptoms not to ignore:
- Unexplained weight loss -- Experiencing a 5 percent weight loss in a month or a 10 percent weight loss within six to 12 months could signal a number of different conditions such as an overactive thyroid, depression, liver disease, cancer or other noncancerous disorders that interfere with how well your body absorbs nutrients.
- Persistent fever -- A persistent low-grade fever -- over 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit -- should be evaluated if it lasts for a week or more. Fever can signal underlying infections. Some underlying cancers and other medical conditions can cause prolonged, persistent fever. A fever accompanied by violent chills or greater than 103 degrees Fahrenheit should be evaluated right away.
- Shortness of breath -- Gasping for air or wheezing are medical emergencies. Causes vary widely and can include asthma, heart problems, anxiety, panic attacks, or a blood clot in the lungs.
- Unexplained changes in bowel habits -- Bowel habit changes may signal a bacterial infection, a viral infection, inflammatory bowel disease or colon cancer. Seek care for any of the following:
-- Severe diarrhea lasting more than two days -- Mild diarrhea lasting a week -- Constipation that lasts for more than two weeks -- Unexplained urges to have a bowel movement -- Bloody diarrhea -- Black or tarry-colored stools.
- Mental status changes -- Changes in behavior or thinking may be due to infection, head injury, stroke, low blood sugar or medications. Immediate medical care is warranted for any of the following:
-- Sudden or gradual confused thinking -- Disorientation -- Sudden aggressive behavior -- Hallucinations in someone who has never had them.
- New or more-severe headaches (especially for those over age 50) -- Medical attention is needed right away for: -- A sudden and severe headache, often called a thunderclap headache, because it comes on suddenly like a clap of thunder. -- A headache accompanied by a fever, stiff neck, rash, mental confusion, seizure, vision changes, weakness, numbness, speaking difficulties, scalp tenderness or pain with chewing.
Causes vary for headaches that are considered medical emergencies and may include stroke, blood vessel inflammation, meningitis, brain tumor, aneurysm or bleeding on the brain after head trauma.
- Short-term loss of vision, speaking, movement or control -- Minutes count because these are symptoms of a possible stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA). Seek immediate emergency care for any of the following:
-- Sudden weakness or numbness of the face, arm, leg on one side of the body -- Sudden dimness, blurring or loss of vision -- Loss of speech, or trouble talking or understanding speech -- A sudden or severe headache -- Sudden dizziness, unsteadiness or a fall.
- Flashes of light -- The sudden sensation of flashing lights may signal the beginning of retinal detachment. For that condition, immediate care is needed to save vision in the affected eye.
- Feeling full after eating very little -- Feeling full sooner than normal after eating or having persistent nausea or vomiting for a week might indicate possible gastrointestinal disorders, pancreatic cancer, stomach cancer or ovarian cancer.
- Hot, red or swollen joints -- These warning signs may occur with a joint infection, which requires emergency care to save the joint and prevent the spread of bacteria. Other causes could include gout or certain types of arthritis.
