“Eight years had passed since my horseback riding accident that left me with one ankle that was seriously damaged, limiting my mobility and causing arthritis pain nearly 24-7. The arthritis is exacerbated by a state of overweight that is life-threatening in itself. The challenge was this: I wanted to improve my health, yet I refused to go on another diet for the rest of my life. I knew I needed to improve my fitness, but I was so limited in choices because of my ankle and doctor’s orders to choose a non-weight-bearing exercise plan.

She’s taught me how to get the most of my workout time. Now there always seems to be time for even a half-hour workout – even when I’m traveling.

“Before I went to Healthier Outcomes, I basically had given up on exercise programs and didn't have one, after hurting myself a couple of years ago on a machine at the gym and seeing my personal trainer move away. I now realize that I really need the extra motivation provided by checking in with someone on a regular basis. What I like most about Fitness Coaching is its flexibility. Checking in by telephone allows me to maximize my time exercising rather than spending time arranging and then going to and from appointments with a personal trainer, as I did before.

I think that Fitness Coaching shifts the responsibility of maintaining the effectiveness of fitness training to the client in a way that doesn't always happen with exercise dependent on meeting with one's trainer to get it done. “Except for my college years, I have generally hated even the thought of "exercise." Oh, I tried various things, but they never lasted long. Then a few years ago I joined a gym and discovered I really loved the machines (and the hot tub); however, when I changed jobs and had to go to a gym in a different town that was crowded (and smelly)-at least during the times that I went, which was after work, I gave that up also. Then a friend of mine at work suggested Healthier Outcomes . I said, why not? I didn't have to go anywhere. I could call my coach from work and exercise by just walking out the front door of my office.

Pretty soon, I found on my walks that my feet were wanting to fly over the pavement, so I started walking and running, then built up to where I would run the 30 minutes. It became addictive-I was actually looking forward to it! Then I added "strength-training" and intermittent "cross-training"-e.g., bike riding (to and from work), using the "slide" (especially rainy nights when I didn't want to go outside), and even started going to a weekly yoga class.

And yes, I have slipped on occasion, and taken a break now and then (sometimes a result of my aged joints rebelling), but something inside me is determined to keep going. It has worked out so well that three of us here in the office are using her. As a parting thought, I have learned that exercise can be joy.”

“Before I worked with Gillian, my exercise program was terribly inconsistent. I knew that I should exercise on a regular basis, so I would get on a program for about 3 - 4 weeks and then stop again. I was thinking about getting a personal trainer but couldn't find one that fit my schedule and was willing to work with me on the types of exercise I wanted to do. I met my coach and instantly knew that I wanted to work with her. I immediately felt her support and desire to have her clients succeed. Beyond that, she was non-judgmental.

I also liked the variety of exercise she introduced me to and how she kept me challenged. The other programs in which I have participated were in gyms where I was encouraged to use their equipment and facilities. With Fitness Coaching, I was introduced to free weights and found ways that I could work out without joining a gym. I think my favorite part is that I could measure my activity and instantly see where I was improving.

I also liked that Gillian could understand my struggles to remain consistent in my exercise program and losing and keeping weight off. There is something very special about having someone understand and empathize with your struggle.

“Before beginning the fitness coaching program, I would read the latest information in some magazine on THE exercises that were touted to be the best for keeping all over health and decide that this was it - I'd start a new program. Then, other magazines or reports would come out stating that THEIR programs had been proven to be the best and I would wonder what REALLY was the best for me. I wasn't sure what I should do, so I ended up doing nothing. My boss was a client of Gillian’s and from what she and my nutritionist were telling me, this program sounded great! Here was a personal trainer who came with recommendations from two people I trusted - plus, I didn't have to go somewhere to attend a class at a given time each week. I could tailor my exercise to my schedule, which is crazy at best.

What I like about my exercise program is that it's made just for me - specifically what I need to stay healthy - and not just the latest craze made up generically for the entire population. I don't care what those magazines say now - I know I'm targeting what keeps ME fit! Gillian takes into consideration my whole life, not just the exercise program. What the generic exercise programs do not consider is what else in my life that affects my exercise. The exercise can change as needed to match what is happening with me.
